Personal strategy for career development |
|
by Ricky Pillay |
Rather than seeing
yourself as an employee working for someone, a more refreshing approach
is to see yourself as a business person selling skills to your employer. To be
a successful business person, you need a mission, a guiding vision
and strategy. If you don’t have a personal vision (an image of a
preferred future), picture yourself into becoming a GREAT BUSINESS PERSON.
Knowing where you
are going to is not good enough, you must decide how to get there, that’s
strategy. In using a strategy of values and goals, your goal must be to offer a
GREAT PRODUCT (i.e. your SKILLS). Make sure that your skills are portable so
that it can be applied to a variety of job functions, disciplines and careers.
Staying plugged into creativity will greatly enhance your skill and remember
that your job is graded, not your potential. Your employer who is buying and
paying you for your PRODUCT (skills) has a right to after sales SERVICE. Be
nice to your customer/s and offer them value for their money. Then constantly
improve your product (skills).
Multi-skill, self-educate, train, develop and equip yourself with the skills and
knowledge required for advancement.
Strive for
high-class performance in all your activities and be dedicated to the
progressive spirit of excellence and change.
Your VALUES
represent your highest priorities. It defines how you will behave and base your
decisions and serves to protect you from the disgrace of unethical activities
and behavior. It would make you a reputable business person.
Finally, your
MISSION in life (if you don't have one) should be “staying ahead of the game”.
